How Can I Set Up My Satellite and Orbi Router?
The Orbi satellites and routers are the part of the Netgear Orbi mesh system that you can connect through cables. Here, we will discuss about how to set your Orbi router with the modem and Sync Orbi satellite with the router wirelessly. For start, you will get at least these things: The main Orbi Router, One or more Satellites, Power adapters, An Ethernet cable.
Orbi Router and Satellite Setup
Plug in the Orbi Router
This is the heart of your WiFi setup. The Netgear Orbi router connects directly to your modem (modem: box that gets internet from your ISP). So, unplug the modem first, wait 10 seconds, then plug it again. After that:
Link up the Ethernet cable (LAN) from your modem’s LAN to the yellow port means WAN port on the Orbi Router.
Plug in the router’s power cable to the working power wall socket. Turn it on.
Wait for the Orbi to turn solid white, and then it'll go blinking white. That’s normal. Just let it do its thing.
Now wait a bit. You’ll know it's ready when the light turns solid blue, amber, or magenta (I’ll explain those later).
Plug in the Satellite(s)
Okay, now the satellite is what helps spread your WiFi throughout your house, especially if you’ve got thick walls, weird layouts, or dead zones where your old WiFi just gave up.
Place your satellite in a central spot, maybe like halfway between your Orbi router and where you usually chill (or work, or binge Netflix).
Plug in the satellite.
The Satellite will blink white light while starting up, and then it’ll try to connect to the router.
Let’s see Orbi Satellites light colors mean after it’s done syncing:
Blue = great connection
Amber/Orange = meh connection (might want to move it closer)
Magenta/Pink = no connection (yeah, this one’s a problem)
If it stays magenta, unplug the satellite, move it closer to the router, and try again.
Download the Orbi App
Now, technically you can do this whole thing through a browser, but honestly, the app is the easiest way. Open the App Store or Google Play on your phone to download the Orbi app by NETGEAR.
Open and access it through the orbi admin login. Inside the app, connect your router with phone, naming your network, setting a password, and so on.
The app will also update your firmware if needed – and yes, that step takes a little while so maybe go grab a coffee or scroll through your phone or something.
